Bed Bug Nightmares

March 12th, 2012 | Posted by TimD in Bed Bug Inspection | bed bugs | Dogs - (0 Comments)

Having a bed bug infestation can make a long lasting impression on your life. You have to replace clothing and certain pieces of furniture. You become intimately aware with extermination processes and find yourself strangely familiar with the detailed life cycle of a particularly pervasive bug.

One other side affect that often occurs after the bed bug sniffing dogs have identified your problem and your life has been turned around for a few days is an ever present bed bug anxiety. Many people who have had bed bugs find themselves having anxious panicked nightmares about a new infestation of the critters.

I have discussed this phenomena with a handful of folks who have suffered this fate. They say that the nightmares can pop up every few weeks and as more distance comes between them and their bed bug infestation they happen less frequently. Of course the first few are the worst. They feel like a “here we go again” moment, with the looming trouble making you crazy.

Luckily to set you at ease whenever a scare occurs is the helpful noses of bed bug sniffing dogs. A friend in this situation recently tweeted, “The best part of waking up from my bed bug nightmares is that I am soon reassured that I currently do not have bed bugs.” Sound kind of thrilling.

Man’s best friend has long been a valuable asset. There are dogs that sniff for drugs and bombs, as well as dogs that can guide the blind. So it should come as no surprise that bed bug sniffing dogs would be such a huge help in finding and identifying the presence of a bed bug infestation.

The dogs that are used to sniff out a bed bug infestation are a specific breed. A well trained bed bug sniffing dog can detect even a single live bed bug or an egg with up to 96 percent accuracy. This is a marvelous talent that is mightily impressive. Of course, we have a long established tradition of allowing dogs to help us sniff out our problems. The dogs used to sniff for bombs and drugs are just as impressive as these bed bug sniffing dogs, though their targets tend to be larger and their smells more pervasive.

The amazing canine nose is one of nature’s most striking achievements. Human’s ability to utilize those noses is a vital asset in the fight against the rampant spread of bed bugs in and around urban areas. These dogs are the first line of defense and a great way to figure out exactly what sort of problem you are having.

Is it safe?

If you are looking into new apartments there is likely a wide variety of concerns you have already considered. Space considerations and location with regards to wear you work and socialize. Id there a near by subway or some other form of transportation. Some folks have the consideration of parking a particularly troubling request in cities. However another consideration that many gloss over is the potential for dormant or even active pests especially bed bugs.

These days many realtors are recommending future home owners have a look for at least persistent pests like beg bugs before moving in. Of course the only really effective way to have such an inspection is to call in some bed bug sniffing dogs trained to sniff out the pesky critters which can create a terrible situation in a new home.

With a bed bug infestation present in a home a seller can remain unaware for a long period of time or even simply brush it under the rug during the selling process. To avoid this headache it is helpful to consider a walk through with bed bug dogs. Just to be safe about everything. As a person buying or even renting a new place it is your right to check out what that place may have in store for you.

Over the last few years, as bed bugs have made something of a comeback in the New York consciousness, I have heard a wide array of often suspicious bed bug oriented horror stories. Among them was a girl who Tweeted that she watched as a bed bug crawled off of a fellow subway rider and onto a second passenger. Unless this girl had some sort of super-microscopic-vision that story seems highly unlikely.

Thing is, once something like a bed bug infestation becomes a regular topic of conversation, the typical New Yorkers, ever concerned with being the most interesting person around, will try and use the issue to enhance their own New York City cred. Strange that bed bugs could become not dissimilar to celebrity sightings or restaurant reservations in the New York clout bolstering abilities. Of course we are talking about a city where people like to talk up muggings like they were notches on the bed post.

Once bed bug sniffing dogs are brought into manage a situation then you can start telling the actual boring and practical real bed bug story that most New Yorkers have actually missed. The situation will likely be resolved through a series of phone calls and a week or so of actually getting the ‘boring’ work of cleaning done.

Having a bed bug infestation is not the end of the world. Growing up I was indoctrinated by my neat freak mother to assume that any and all pest infestation should be seen as a clear sign that you have gone off the rails. Truth be told a bed bug infestation is really not the life halting crisis it seems to some. Yes it is annoying and may result in some of your stuff being thrown away. True the cleaning can be very expensive. At the end of the day though life will go on.

Once you have figured out how to identify bed bugs and have begun making an effort to repair your life, doing the appropriate cleaning, getting rid of particularly troubled items, wrapping mattresses and box springs in bed bug bags, you can very quickly get back to normal life. You are not some leper unable to engage with the outside world. It is likely that as long as your clothing has been cleaned thoroughly and you have cleaned your self up you can get right back to meeting friends, going to work, and even visiting your neat freak mother to let her know her fears of infestation were overstated.

There are a number of sprays one can buy at the local big-box store that claim to be “bed bug and flea spray.” While I am not going to argue against the merits of them as a way to manage a bed bug infestation, I am going to call into question the logic of a person not involving some experts in this situation. Bed bug infestations can last for decades without showing clear signs of being there. Being sure that what you have are bed bugs is not as simple as a Google search. This is why it is widely encouraged that you employ a service with bed bug sniffing dogs, like the ones used by The Bed Bug Professionals.

Being certain that what you have actually are bed bugs can help you better handle the situation. If the situation is not caused by bed bugs, you may still need to uncover what the problem exactly is. It could be better or worse, but without professional consideration you will never actually know.

Some folks who get infested decide early on that the problem is not as bad as they had thought. They ignore the need for bed bug dogs and ignore the advice of people who know better. These people live with bed bugs for a long, long time.

If you were feeling down on yourself about your bed bug infestation, perhaps feeling a little like you were one of the filthy masses do we have a story for you. While you were wrapping your mattress in a bed bug case to suffocate those critters the same process was going on at the swanky Ritz Carlton, one of New York’s most highly regarded and best known hotels.

That should clear up the feeling that bed bugs are the problem of the low income set once and for all. Luckily there is now more and more information available about how to identify bed bugs and once you have, how to properly deal with them. Of course the reputation damaged by a bed bug infestation is surely going to trouble the folks who have made the Ritz Carlton into the highly regarded spot that it is. If the movie theaters in Times Square who were in many ways ground zero of a lot of bed bug anxieties are any indication though, people forget pretty quickly.

Bed bugs are a problem but they are a manageable problem and the Ritz Carlton luckily has the resources to deal with them efficiently and effectively.

The Bed Bug Blame Game

January 23rd, 2012 | Posted by TimD in Bed Bug Inspection | bed bugs | Dogs - (0 Comments)

When you are doing your best to handle a bed bug infestation it can be difficult to not play the blame game. You are simply looking for anyone or anything that you can blame for the troublesome bed bugs not to mention the bed bug sniffing dogs now searching your apartment. You wonder if it was that weekend house guest who you happily let take up residence on your couch. Was it the movie theater you went to last week to see The Artist, seemed like a classy place but the floors were a little sticky, could their lackluster clean up have extended to a bed bug infestation?

No matter how you slice it bed bugs are not something you will be likely to pinpoint to a source. In fact, the real truth is they just end up at your home sometime. Perhaps you stepped on the wrong spot at even the classiest place in the universe. The thing is, these bugs do not see class. Everyone from the highest end of the one percent, to the lowliest individuals of the ninety-nine percent could just as easily find themselves employing bed bug detection service. Infestation knows no bounds and sees no class.

Bed Bug Itching Cures?

So you have addressed your horrible but manageable bed bug infestation. That is great news. You are in the process of cleaning everything you own and getting rid of some of the more infested elements. This is what progress feels like. But, you still happen to be quite itchy. Well sadly there is no immediate cure all for bed bug bites and anyone who has been through a full scale bed bug infestation is not likely to get out without quite a few of those bites.

Use an antihistamine cream to start to alleviate the itchiness. Remember that aggressively scratching those bites, which you will likely be desperate to do, could leave you with some rather unpleasant looking skin blemishes. What’s worse is irritating the skin with scratching could make the symptoms last a whole lot longer. The best thing to do is to try and rub some of that cream in gently whenever the itchiness becomes completely unbearable.

Chances are the bites will be gone within five to ten days which from the itchy place you might be sitting in surely feels like an epic duration. Still if you handle them with an antihistamine and keep from scratching you’re likely to end the period a lot happier.

Some people suspect, quite misguidedly, that having bed bugs is some indication of class or a lack of general cleanliness. Truth is there are filthy apartments and homes which will likely never have bed bugs and some well maintained mansions that can not seem to get rid of them. The thing with bed bugs, especially in New York, is they can latch onto you no matter what your position is in life. With the poorest New Yorkers living right on top of or alongside the richest New Yorkers there is little indication that your economic or sociological position in life would have any distinct effect on whether you get bed bugs or not.

A bed bug infestation can strike almost anyone almost anywhere. The wrong seat choice on public transportation or hopping into the wrong cab can lead to finding bed bugs. It is not an issue of anything other than the luck, or lack of luck, of the draw. Once bed bugs have latched onto you and made your home their own you should get to work as soon as possible getting rid of them. Do not sit around complaining about where they came from or why they are there, simply get rid of them. As soon as possible.
